Linda Jones
Introducing the Goddess of Soul Music

Linda Jones was born in Newark, New Jersey, and began singing at the tender age of six with her family's gospel group, the Jones Singers. Her early exposure to gospel music helped shape her powerful and emotive vocal style, which would later define her career as a soul singer. In 1963, Jones made her first recording, a rendition of "Lonely Teardrops," under the stage name Linda Lane for Cub Records. Her breakthrough came when songwriter Jerry Harris discovered her performing at a local club and introduced her to producer George Kerr. This partnership eventually led to her signing with Loma Records, a subsidiary of Warner Bros., in 1967.

Linda’s time with Loma Records proved to be the pinnacle of her career, with the release of her biggest hit, "Hypnotized," which soared to No. 4 on the Billboard R&B chart and No. 21 on the Hot 100. The success of "Hypnotized" was followed by two more R&B hits, "What've I Done (To Make You Mad)" and an album that showcased her emotional and dynamic vocal abilities. After Loma Records closed in 1968, Jones continued to work with Kerr and released music through Neptune Records and later Turbo Records, where her career was reignited with her soulful rendition of "For Your Precious Love" in 1972, which reached No. 15 on the R&B chart.

Tragically, Linda Jones' life and career were cut short later that year when she passed away at the age of 27 due to complications from diabetes. She died at her mother's home while resting between performances at the Apollo Theater. Despite her brief career, her legacy has endured. Posthumously, All Platinum released three albums of her previously recorded material, and in 2008, her daughter Terry Jones produced the Grammy-nominated album "Soul Talkin," featuring her mother's vocals. In recognition of her contributions to music, the City of Newark renamed a street in her honor, and the Grammy Museum added her artifacts to their New Jersey Legends Exhibit, further cementing her place in music history.
